09 Jun Evelyn’s Secrets: Relaxing in a Hammam in Cyprus

Cyprus is a small island country that has a population of about 1.1 million people. I absolutely loved my time here, because it’s a really peaceful place to be that isn’t as crowded with tourists. It’s definitely off the beaten path, which is why it was so exciting to be here.

Not only does the country have lovely beaches, but there are also mountains and other natural beauty. In terms of sightseeing, there are caves, castles, tombs, and churches to visit here. There is so much history tucked away in this tiny island, although my favourite part of my trip here was something that can’t be found in other parts of the world!

You guys already know how much I love a good spa and experiencing treatments from different parts of the world, so as soon as someone mentioned visiting a traditional hammam, or a Turkish bath, I was on it!

After asking around, we finally found an authentic place that had a stone exterior, while the entire inside of the bath area was mainly made out of shiny marble.

I didn’t know this initially, but hammams are basically just assisted steam baths that are supposed to cleanse and relax you completely. Upon entering, you first enter a room where they serve you some tea or something cold to sip on while you get changed and chill. They recommend that you shower before entering due to sanitary reasons.

From here, you go to a room and acclimatize to the warmth, after which you go into the hot room that has a giant marble slab in the center of the room. As you sit in the room on an individual marble slab, an attendant comes and vigorously scrubs all the dead skin off your entire body. It’s is seriously one of the most cleansing experiences I have had, and you can literally see how much nicer and smooth your skin is once all the dirt and dry skin has been totally scrubbed clean.

It almost felt like I was undergoing some kind of relaxing surgery. After this, you rinse off and get a nice long massage treatment of your choice with oils. I slept so well after this treatment because the entire experience eliminated all of the toxins from my body.

Out of all of my spa experiences, this had to be the most unique because you literally feel like a new person when leaving this kind of relaxing place. If your travels ever take you to Cyprus, Turkey, or any of the other places that have these gems, make sure you take a day to unplug and experience the Turkish bath!

Let me know in the COMMENTS what your favourite spa day looks like!
