Kindness is one of those things that you can literally never have enough of. Even in the most frustrating situations, making a conscious effort to approach everything with a sprinkle of kindness can do wonders for our world. I for one love to do random acts of kindness for my friends without them knowing. Just seeing their lit up faces when something good happens in their lives brings me this indescribable joy! What I have realised however is, that if you do even the smallest act of kindness to someone you don’t really get along with, it creates true magic. Love is the most powerful force in the world and I wish we would use it more often.
Multiple philosophers and writers have told us that “Character is what you do when no one’s watching”. I believe that’s true, so this week I want to work on building a kinder character of my own. Here are my secrets to being kind and ways that you can do something for others today!
1. Pick a place to volunteer
As we grow in our adulthood, it’s important to find causes that you care about so you can contribute your time and talent to. I’ve been working with different charity foundations since I was little, starting with collecting money for our local animal shelter in my home town, to now managing our foundation Seams For Dreams. So a simple tip from me: Start with cleaning out your closets and donate your old clothes! Mobilise your friends to do the same and discover the joy of giving!
2. Phone a friend or family member
Time flies by so quickly and somethings I wake up and realise I haven’t spoken to my family and friends in Germany for weeks! Show some love today and surprise an old friend with a call. Or simply ring up your mom. She will always be happy to hear from you. Make it a point to keep in touch and be proactive about staying involved with those you love. A WhatsApp message is nice, but someone who takes half and hour even to listen to you on the phone, that barely happens anymore.
3. Treat someone
It’s always nice to get the bill, but it’s even nicer when you don’t know the other person or they don’t know you. While travelling abroad, I’ve seen this happen at a lot of busy coffee shops in big cities like San Francisco. Someone has paid for my coffee without me even knowing who they are, which is so cool! It automatically put a smile on my face and inspired me to pay it forward.
4. Give someone a compliment
This is a really subtle and amazing way to make someone feel 100% better. Tell someone how beautiful they are, or how they inspire you. It’s free and seriously the best feeling to make someone else smile. I feel words of kindness are so important and have gone missing in our time of social media likes and shares. If you think someone is awesome, tell them face to face today!
Practice kindness with yourself
When we get so involved in making others feel good, we can quickly forget about ourselves. Be kind with yourself. Be kind to your body, and be kind to your soul. Nourish them with goodness. Get a massage today. Make yourself a nice cup of tea and read a book. Spend time with yourself. Buy yourself your favourite chocolates and remind yourself that you are worthy of love.
6. Plant a tree or some flowers
Mother Nature deserves kindness too! If I could, I would plant a tree somewhere every day! There are definitely not enough of them in Mumbai, so this is more important now than ever. Find a park, church, school, or garden that will allow you to plant some seedlings. What greater joy is there than to give new life! I like to plan little flowers around my own building. My neighbours will be quite surprised after the monsoon!
7. Stay calm!
I know there are times when you meet the most frustrating people or situations and it seems impossible to stay patient and kind. Well, congratulations! This is where character is formed! These are the challenges life throws in for our benefit. Today, stay calm and stay encouraged. Encounter every situation with love and you will see how the world around you will change!
